Using Non-Examples to Boost Students’ Maths Achievement

Using non-examples is an effective strategy to enhance students' understanding and achievement in mathematics by clarifying what a concept is and isn't. This approach involves presenting standard examples alongside non-examples that do not meet the criteria, such as showing shapes that resemble triangles but lack a critical attribute. By actively reflecting on why these non-examples do not fit the concept, students develop a deeper understanding of essential properties. Including boundary cases and sequencing related examples and non-examples helps highlight critical features. Encouraging students to create their own examples and non-examples further reinforces their comprehension, promoting critical thinking and reducing misconceptions, ultimately leading to improved mathematical achievement.
